Nawaaqid Al-Islam – Nullifiers of Islam – Intro

Notes from the classes on Nawaaqid Al-Islam – Nullifiers of Islam by Shakyh Muhammad ibn Abdul al-Wahab رحمه الله, as explained by Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan رحمه الله.

Though the text mentions 10 nullifiers, it important to note that there are not only 10 nullifiers.

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan رحمه الله, in his explanation states that in the book, Shaykh Abdul al-Wahab, starts off with i’Lam (that we should learn and understand). What comes after this particular word (i’Lam) is extremely important.

The nullifiers of Islam mentioned are 10. Nawaaqid is plural for naaqid. Nawaaqid is something that negates or nullifies. It is known as the means of apostasy. The believers must be warned and must stay away from these things.

If the believers does not understand the nullifiers, then it may cause them to fall out of the fold of Islam. These affairs thus can cause their Islam to be nullified.

The meaning of riddah is apostasy, which is to come out of the fold of Islam. He turns back from a particular belief that can cause him to come out of the fold of islam and will be among the losers.

Allahسبحانه و تعالى informs us that whoever turns away from the religion, Islam, and dies in that state, their deeds will be rendered nullified. And they will be a habitant of hell fire. This is amongst the believers who turned back from Islam. Allah is talking to the believers, not the disbelievers! This person did not make repentance before dying and will thus be habitant of the hell fire.

Allahسبحانه و تعالىinforms us in another verse that who turns their backs on the true Islam after it had been clear to them then indeed shaitan embellished their ways and made them go astray.

Allahسبحانه و تعالى says:

“And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, “Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah ] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment.”(‘Ibrahim (14): Verse 22)

Islam is the truth. There is no other way.

Allahسبحانه و تعالى informs us in another verse that:

“O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion – Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah ; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Al-Ma’idah (5): Verse 54)

This verse by Allahسبحانه و تعالى was for the companions concerning the future affair of Abu Bakr’s (RA) time in which people will leave the religion. Omar (RA) asked Abu Bakr (RA) if he was going to fight the people who did not pay the zakaat even though they were believers. Abu Bakr (RA) said that the narration is that he will fight until the worship of Allah is established. “Sawfa” is the distant future.

If apostasy is taken by one person, he is taken and told to repent. The one who apostates knows the truth and he left the religion by choice. This is the murtad (the one who disbelieves after believing). He knows the religion and came by choice. He knows Islam is the truth. If he apostates then this individual is playing with the religion. This is because he knows the truth

Thus learning these affairs is important.

There is a special section in fiqh for the ones who apostates by the ulema .

The murtad can turn away whether from:

  • A disease in his heart or,
  •  Doubt in the affairs of Allahسبحانه و تعالى (Such as doubt of zakaat or affairs of the Sunnah, or doubt in the salah being fard, or singling out Allah.
  • Or through doing actions and things other than for Allah. (Apostasy happens when there is prostration to other than by Allah, sacrificing other than Allah, swearing by other than Allah, and the likes.)

The categories of Tawheed (singling out Allah سبحانه و تعالى), as mentioned by the people of knowledge, are three:

  1. Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyyah (Tawheed of Allah’s Lordship)
  2. Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah (Tawheed of Allah’s sole right to all worship)
  3. Tawheed Al-Asmaa was-Sifaat (Tawheed of Allah’s names and attributes)

There are those who make a mockery of Islam. They state that islam is not for now, it was for back then. Does Allah not know the future? They are playing with the words of Allah. They mock the wearing of the thobe, the growing of the beard and the likes. Did Allah make these things for the people back then and not for the people who came after? No he did not. You have thus disbelieved after accepting Islam.

Whoever do these things have disbelieved.

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan says that the Shaykh is mentioning the most important types of nullifiers. Sh. Fawzaan says that in this time— ignorance has spread. If we look at our state today in society, so much is away from Islam, it has become a norm. It takes us away from Islam. We are living in life away from Islam and spreading ignorance. A lot of people are away from deen. Not much people know the affairs of Islam. Ignorance has spread. There are those who appear and call themselves people of knowledge. These people say do not pronounce that people are disbelievers. They say it is sufficient to just say that “I am a muslim” but the verse that was revealed for Abu Bakr’s (RA) time (5:54) goes against this.

They say (they ones who appear and call themselves people of knowledge) to don’t make segregation between the believers.

However, we are to unite the people upon the truth—not falsehood. Those who apostatized after the prophet died was fought against by the sahaba.

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan says it is more severe to pronounce a believer a kafir than a nonbeliever… so long as they say “La ilaha illallah”.
