The following are some benefits mentioned by our Shaykh, Saalih Al Fawzaan (Class Fathul Majeed 24th November 2016):

Did The Salaf Say: “I Visited The Grave Of The Prophet”?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan said:

It was not known that the Salaf used to say “I visited the grave of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم” rather Imaam Maalik رحمه الله used to dislike when someone made this statement.

Shaykh Ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyah mentioned that Imaam Maalik met the Taabieen (3rd Best Generation) and they were the most knowledgeable people of this affair.

Our Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan mentioned: One should not say “I visited the grave of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم” because the Salaf were not known to make this statement, he said: rather this was a statement disliked by Imaam Maalik.

Does This mean Imaam Maalik Disapproved Visiting The Graveyard?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan mentioned:

As for Imaam Maalik he did not disapprove visiting the graveyard of the muslims but rather he was concerned and afraid that people would begin worshipping them.

So What Should Someone Say When Visiting The Grave of The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم ?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan Said:

A person should instead say: “I visited the Prophet’s Masjid” or he should say: “I sent salaams upon the Prophet صلـي الله عليه و سلم”

Who Was Al Laat?

Allah mention in His book in Surah An Najm, Verse 19:

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ

Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-‘Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs).

Our Shaykh may Allah preserve him said:

Al Laat was a righteous person who use to feed the Hujaaj (Pilgrims) when they made Hajj, when he passed away the people began to worship him.

Are There Benefits in Passing By Non Muslims Graveyards?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan mentioned:

If it is someone were to see or pass by non muslim graveyards, then there is one benefit for the believer and that is to be reminded of the Aakihrah.

However, when a believer visits the graveyard of the muslims then he derives two benefits:

  1. He is reminded of the Aakhirah.
  2. He can benefit the deceased with supplication and sending salaams upon him.

Is It Permissible To Pray In A Masjid That Is Joined To a Graveyard?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan responded:

If it is that a masjid is connected to the graveyard then it is not permissible to pray in it, however if there is something that separates or is in between the masjid and the graveyard then it is permissible to pray in that Masjid.

Is It Permissible to Purchase The Land of Which Graves are Worshiped?

Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan Responded:

If it is you’re going to stop or remove the worshipping of these graves then this is good and may Allah reward you, but if you’re not going to remove this grave worship then it is not permissible to purchase this land.
