The Creed of the Khawarij – (From The Explanation of Al-Haa’iyah – Sh. Fawzaan)

“And do not hold a belief like the Khawarij, for it is a position held by only those who desire it, and it is destructive and disgraceful” (Al Haa’iyah by Ibn Abi Dawud)

Al-Khawarij are one of the misguided sects and they have been given the name khawarij (i.e Rebel or separatist from the Arabic word خرج meaning to leave), because they have separated away from obedience to the Muslim Rulers. And the first of the rulers who they rebelled against was ‘Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه during his rule.

They said: “Why do you allow men to judge (in the affair) when Allah said:

إِنِ الْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ

“The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allah!?” (Yusuf: 40)

And that is why when ‘Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه sent ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه to debate with them, they presented to him this doubt (saying): “‘Ali allowed human beings to be those in whose hands is the judgement.” So he replied: “Did not Allah give man the authority to judge in the affair of the rabbit that is hunted by one who is Muhrim (i.e one who is in ritual devotion to perform Hajj)? (Allah said regarding the game that is killed intentionally:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْتُلُوا الصَّيْدَ وَأَنتُمْ حُرُمٌ ۚ وَمَن قَتَلَهُ مِنكُم مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاءٌ مِّثْلُ مَا قَتَلَ مِنَ النَّعَمِ يَحْكُمُ بِهِ ذَوَا عَدْلٍ مِّنكُمْ

“The penalty is an offering, brought to the Ka’bah, of an eatable animal (i.e sheep, goat, cow) equivalent to the one he killed, as a adjudged by two just men among you” (Al-Mai’dah: 95)

And did Allah not give men the authority to judge between spouses in the case of dispute in His saying:

وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ شِقَاقَ بَيْنِهِمَا فَابْعَثُوا حَكَمًا مِّنْ أَهْلِهِ وَحَكَمًا مِّنْ أَهْلِهَا إِن يُرِيدَا إِصْلَاحًا يُوَفِّقِ اللَّهُ بَيْنَهُمَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا خَبِيرً

“If you fear a breach between them twain (the man and his wife), appoint (two) arbitrators, one from his family and the other from hers; if they both wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation. Indeed Allah is the All-Knowing All-Aware” (An-Nisa: 35)

So Allah allowed men to judge. Thus Ali’s decision to allow men to make judgments is from this type (which is permissible).

“A position held by only those who desire it”: meaning they love and follow (this evil position).

“And it is destructive”: meaning it destroys the one who utters this position, because it is a dangerous belief which contains within it the concept of declaring the Muslims to be disbelievers, deeming their lives and wealth to be lawful (and no longer sacred). And this belief of theirs include the idea of rebelling against the Muslim Rulers.

This is the methodology of the Khawarij, from which other disgusting methodologies spin-off. Therefore do not hold this belief, do not even incline toward it. Rather consider it to be mere falsehood. And note that what has proceeded is in reference to the one who merely holds their position, although he has not carried out their actions. So what about the one who not only shares their position, but actually carries out these dangerous principles?
