Shaykh Fawzaan mentioned in yesterday’s class of Al Muntaqa the manner in which the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم gave the Khutbah: The Prophet’s words were few, light & blessed, and it wasn’t a Khutbah that was long and hard.
The Shaykh mentioned that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم lengthened the salah & shortened the sermon. He said that the Prophet’s eyes would become red—he would raise his voice and would become very serious as though he was addressing an army.
Later the Shaykh responded to a question in which someone asked if it is possible for the Imaams today to lengthen the Khutbah because of the condition of the people in these times when their eemaan is low. The Shaykh said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم used to shorten his sermon; is it that the guidance of the people today is better than the guidance of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم? He said this is the Sunnah of the Prophet and so we are to follow him in every aspect.
May Allah protect our Ulama for they are as the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم describes them compared to the regular worshippers, like the moon compared to the rest of the stars. They are a favor from Allah upon us, so take it.
